I was really taken by Uluru when I visited it in April 2021. It is majestic and I wanted to paint it. I was also really taken with the intention of the Uluru Statement when I first heard it five years ago. The rock is so iconic, that it has been difficult to think of any way to represent it that hasn’t been done many times before, or doesn’t look like NT tourism, or doesn’t acknowledge and pay respects to the traditional owner’s past, present and emerging. It is not my rock to paint.
So, with the change of Government, I thought it time to put paint to timber and in my own small way, use clarity of light, colour and mark-making to do justice to it, the rock, and the statement. To speak to the clarity of the vision and the small glimmer of hope for the future that I see in this moment.
